Before 1999 there were many prototypes and ideas bouncing around about combining a telephone and a computer system. But the fist model to achieve mass adoption, was a Japanese company named NTT DoCoMo. These phones ran on i-mode which provided you with data transmission speeds of 9.6 kbit/second. They had limited functionality, small screens and limited band width to allow the phones to use the slower data speeds available. This phone was the Mova n103 Hyper. The rise of i-mode helped NTT DoCoMo rise to approximately 40 million subscribers by the end of 2001. It was also first in market capitalization in japan and second world wide. This power would decrease in the world of uprising 3G and new phones with advanced wireless network capabilities.
